Redox flow batteries for energy conversion and storage: Experimental measurements and modelling of dissolution/crystallisation processes

Context and objectives

The proposed work will be carried out in the frame of the 4 years project V-S-L, funded by The French National Research Agency (ANR). The project introduces a new concept: “all aqueous, all-Vanadium, Solid (crystalized V salts) / Liquid (dissolved V salts) Redox Flow Battery (VSL- RFB)”. It expects to overcome the limitations of the standard “all liquid” concepts (specifically their low energy density), by scientific and technological actions enabling to i) bring new knowledge in the field, ii) design, manufacture and optimize a VSL-RFB able to deliver 100 W. The workpackage leaded by the Laboratoire de Génie Chimique, LGC-INPT, focuses on the kinetics of the vanadium salts (Vs) phases change, i.e. Dissolution/Crystallization (D/C). It aims at understanding the D/C mechanisms and defining the laws providing the D/C rates. The most critical phenomenon to study is the effect of a nano-metric carbon black additive in the electrolyte on the D/C mechanisms, as well as to identify the favoured D/C locations in the reactor.

The scientific approach will combine experimental measurements on dedicated laboratory devices as well as a modelling approach combining thermodynamics and kinetics aspects. It will imply a strong collaboration with other teams of the V-S-L project dealing with electrochemistry and rheology.

Candidate profile

We are looking for a highly motivated and creative post-doctoral researcher with a strong drive and motivation to tackle major challenges in new vanadium batteries. He or she should have a PhD in Chemical Engineering with a background in crystallization processes. Electrochemistry knowledge will constitute a significant advantage. We also require a high level of English, high motivation and ability to be involved in a multidisciplinary team as well as excellent team working and communication skills. The duration of the postdoctoral position is 24 months; the position is open from January 2018.

Applicants should send their CV, a cover letter and the contact of two references.
